How to compare energy tariffs

Fixed or variable tariff?

A fixed tariff locks in your unit rates and standing charges for the length of the contract, usually 12 to 24 months. Your bill still depends on how much energy you use, but the price per kWh wonโ€™t change, which makes budgeting easier. Most fixed deals charge an exit fee if you leave early.

A variable tariff can go up or down. Standard variable tariffs follow the Ofgem energy price cap, which is reviewed every three months, and usually have no exit fees, so you can switch whenever you like.

How we work out the monthly estimate

Each estimate uses Ofgemโ€™s typical medium usage of 2,700 kWh of electricity and 11,500 kWh of gas a year. We multiply that usage by each planโ€™s unit rates, add the daily standing charges for 365 days and divide by 12. Prices vary by region and your own usage will differ, so use the figure to compare plans rather than as a quote.

Exit fees

Exit fees are charged per fuel, so leaving a dual fuel fixed deal early can cost twice the amount shown. You donโ€™t pay an exit fee if you switch in the last 49 days of a fixed contract, and standard variable tariffs donโ€™t charge them. Check the exit fee on each plan above before you switch.

How switching works

Your new supplier handles the switch for you. Switches must be completed within five working days, or your new supplier pays you ยฃ40 compensation, and you can cancel within 14 days if you change your mind. Your supply wonโ€™t be interrupted and no engineer visit is needed, because the same pipes and cables keep supplying your home.

Energy deals FAQs

Should I choose a fixed or variable energy tariff?

A fixed tariff is usually the better choice if you can find one priced below the Ofgem price cap, as it protects you from price rises for the length of the contract. A variable tariff suits you if you want the flexibility to switch at any time without exit fees, or if you expect prices to fall.

What is the energy price cap?

The price cap is the maximum Ofgem allows suppliers to charge for each unit of gas and electricity, plus the daily standing charge, on standard variable and default tariffs in England, Scotland and Wales. It caps the rates, not your total bill, so the more you use the more you pay. Ofgem reviews it every three months.

Will my energy be cut off when I switch supplier?

No. Your gas and electricity keep coming through the same pipes and cables, so there's no interruption to your supply and no engineer visit. Your old supplier keeps supplying you until the switch is complete.

How long does it take to switch energy supplier?

Suppliers must complete a switch within five working days. If they don't, your new supplier must pay you ยฃ40 compensation. You can still cancel within 14 days if you change your mind.

Will I pay an exit fee to leave my current tariff?

Only if you're on a fixed tariff and leave with 50 days or more left on the contract. Exit fees are charged per fuel. Standard variable tariffs don't have exit fees, and you can leave a fixed deal for free in its last 49 days.

Why is my bill different from the estimated monthly cost?

The estimate uses Ofgem's typical medium usage of 2,700 kWh of electricity and 11,500 kWh of gas a year. Your bill depends on how much energy you actually use and on the prices in your region, so it can be higher or lower.

Can you set up my energy when I move home?

Yes. Our free utility setup service can set up your energy, water, broadband and council tax in one short call when you move, so your accounts are ready from the day you get the keys.
