How to compare broadband deals

What speed do you need?

The speeds shown are average download speeds. Around 30 to 75 Mbps suits one or two people browsing, streaming in HD and working from home. Around 150 Mbps handles regular video calls, gaming and several people streaming at once. 500 Mbps and above suits busy households with lots of connected devices, and gigabit plans of around 900 Mbps or more are the fastest you can get at home.

Contract length and price rises

Most deals run for 12 to 24 months. Longer contracts usually cost less each month, but you may pay an early exit fee if you leave before the end. Since 17 January 2025, Ofcom rules mean any price rise written into a new contract must be set out in pounds and pence when you sign up, so check what youโ€™ll pay later in the contract, not just the starting price.

Availability at your address

Not every provider covers every address. Some full fibre networks only serve certain areas or buildings, so the deals you can get and the speeds youโ€™ll see depend on your property. If you open this page from your Please Connect Me account, the plans are already filtered to the networks and speeds available at your address.

How switching works

Under Ofcomโ€™s One Touch Switch process you only need to contact your new provider, and they manage the switch whichever network youโ€™re on. You wonโ€™t pay notice charges for your old service after the switch date, and providers must compensate you if youโ€™re left without a service for more than one working day.

Broadband deals FAQs

What broadband speed do I need?

For one or two people browsing, streaming and working from home, 30 to 75 Mbps is usually enough. Busier homes with several people streaming, gaming or on video calls at the same time should look at 150 Mbps or more, and full fibre plans of 500 Mbps to 900 Mbps suit households with lots of connected devices.

How long does it take to get broadband installed?

If your new home already has a working connection on the network you choose, your service can often be switched on within a few days. A new installation, especially full fibre, can take two to four weeks, so it's worth ordering as soon as you know your moving date.

Is there a setup fee?

Many broadband deals have no upfront cost, but some providers charge a one-off setup or installation fee. Any setup cost is shown on each plan above, alongside the monthly price.

Will my broadband price go up during my contract?

It can, but since 17 January 2025 Ofcom has banned inflation-linked price rises in new contracts. Any price rise must be set out in pounds and pence when you sign up, so you'll know in advance what you'll pay and when.

How do I switch broadband provider?

Contact the provider you want to move to and they'll arrange the switch for you under Ofcom's One Touch Switch process, even if they use a different network. Your old service should stop automatically once the new one is working.

Can I get broadband without a credit check or UK address history?

Yes. Some providers ask for a minimum UK address history or a credit check, but others, such as Connectivity, don't. This can help if you're new to the UK.

Can you set up my broadband when I move home?

Yes. Our free utility setup service can set up your broadband, energy, water and council tax in one short call when you move, so your accounts are ready from the day you get the keys.
