The 2026 World Cup final kicks off at 8pm UK time on Sunday 19 July, live on the BBC and ITV. Both channels are free on Freeview, or stream via BBC iPlayer and ITV Player with a valid TV licence.

The World Cup final is nearly here, and if you’ve not been following the tournament so far, there’s still time to get caught up before the biggest match of the summer. This is your complete guide to when, where and how to watch the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in the UK, plus what else to expect from the historic first-ever World Cup half-time show.

How to watch the World Cup final in the UK

This is the largest World Cup ever held, with 48 teams playing 104 matches across 16 host cities in three countries - the US, Mexico and Canada. Despite the scale of the tournament, UK broadcast rights are split between just two networks: the BBC and ITV (STV in Scotland). Both channels are part of the Freeview TV package, so if you have a modern digital TV, set-top box or aerial, you can watch for no extra charge.

No TV to hand? You can also stream the match through ITV Player or BBC iPlayer.

Note: you need a TV licence to watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer, including the World Cup final. There’s still time to buy one before kick-off, or head to a local pub or fan zone to watch as part of a crowd instead.

When is the 2026 World Cup final?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup final kicks off at 8pm UK time (20:00 BST) on Sunday 19 July, played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, just outside New York City. Check the BBC or ITV listings nearer the day to confirm the exact UK broadcast start time, since pre-match build-up coverage usually begins earlier.

19 July 2026 is also the exact date the final was locked in by FIFA back in March 2023, long before any of the 48 competing nations had even qualified.

The 2026 World Cup half-time show

For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, the final will feature a Super Bowl-style half-time show. It’s co-produced by the non-profit Global Citizen, with Coldplay’s Chris Martin helping curate the final performer line-up. Madonna, Shakira and BTS are confirmed as headliners, with the show expected to run between 11 and 15 minutes, similar to a typical half-time break, and aiming to raise $100 million for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund.

With three world-famous acts performing, even non-football fans have a reason to tune in on 19 July.

Who’s playing in the World Cup final?

We won’t know the two finalists until the semi-finals are played on Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 July. Before the knockout rounds began, bookmakers had France and Spain sharing favourite status to lift the trophy, with England and Portugal among the leading challengers and Lionel Messi’s Argentina, playing in what he has described as his last World Cup, also strongly fancied. Odds shift quickly once a straight knockout format is underway, so check a bookmaker for up-to-date prices ahead of the semi-finals rather than relying on early-tournament numbers.

If England do go all the way, it’ll mark 60 years since their only World Cup win, in 1966, a diamond anniversary many fans are hoping to see repeated.
