Should I get a water meter fitted?

Did you know that around half of UK households have a water meter fitted? This means that customers only pay for the water they use rather than a fixed monthly fee.

Of course, that also means that half of UK households do not have a water meter fitted, and instead are billed according to the rateable value of their property. This value is based upon the size and general condition of your property, and the availability of local services. This information is then used to calculate a flat rate you will pay for your water use, which is not affected by how much water you actually use.

So, could getting a water meter installed in your home help save you money? As a general rule, if there are more or the same number of bedrooms as occupants in your house, then having a water meter installed could save you money.

What is the cost of installing a water meter?

Water companies install meters for free, and generally customers can switch back to unmetered billing within 12 months if they are unhappy with their new bills.

Cutting back on water consumption can also save you money with a water meter installed. This can be done in various way, including:

  • spending less time in the shower,
  • always using full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher
  • not running the tap when brushing your teeth

However, installing a water meter is not a sure-fire way to save money. If you have a big household, then you could find yourself paying more for your water bills with a water meter than if you remained unmetered.
