Tokyo Olympics 2020- When is it, what time does it start, where to watch

After a year-long postponement due to the global pandemic, the much anticipated Tokyo Olympics 2020 is finally taking place between 23 July and 8 August, in the Japan National Stadium, Shinjuku.

On Monday, The Opening Ceremony will begin at 12:00 pm (20:00 local time), followed by Men’s and Women’s Individual archery events which start at 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm respectively.

  • The International Olympic Committee has announced no spectators are allowed at the venue, due to Tokyo’s state of emergency in response to a spike in Covid-19 cases.
  • As of 19th July, there are 58 confirmed positive cases in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (see the official list here)
  • Several athletes have tested positive for Covid-19, including South African football players Kamohelo Mahlatsi and Thabiso Monyane, and American tennis star Coco Gauff.

Eurosport is the main European rights holder for broadcasting the Olympics this year, while the BBC will cover the major moments totalling over 350 hours of the games. The Opening Ceremony will be shown live on BBC One, BBC Red Button and online.
